Template to creating The Analysis

  1. Scenario Summary

Include these questions into your scenario:

    • Where did the incident occur?

    • Who were the people present at the location at that time?

    • What chemicals caused/contributed to the explosion?

    • What were the quantity of the chemicals stated above?

    • What was the source of the ignition?

    • Why was it present?

    • Possible consequence as a result of the explosion/fire : Any chemical stores / flammable substances nearby?

  2. Detailed Scenario

Using the above questions for reference, including your own, create the worst credible scenario that is practical and applicable to your environment and write in great detail how the explosion comes about from the creation/introduction of the ignition to the end result of the explosion.

  3. Calculations

  4. Hazard Contour

    • Extent of Damages

      • With the values of overpressure and thermal radiation intensity, identify the effect of damages that comes about as a result of the explosion. Then, identify the distances from the center of explosion for overpressure values of 5, 2, 1 & 0.5 psi and thermal radiation intensity values of 4, 12.5 & 37.5 kW/m^2 respectively.

      • Obtain a map of the area of your interest together with the surrounding vicinity (size of the map depends on the distance from the center of explosion for an overpressure value of 5psi) and draw a hazard contour around the center of explosion and analyse the extent of damages caused in the area of explosion and around it.

  5. Discussion

Based on the hazard contour that was formed, study the effect of damages in the area of explosion and the surroundings and evaluate if there maybe a secondary explosion.

  6. Current Protective and Preventive Measures
Identify the current safety devices, emergency action and escape routes that will be taken in case of an emergency. Also take note of the preventive measures taken.

  7. Improvements
Now, with the effect of damages that you have obtained, revisit the current protective and preventive measures and evaluate whether they are effective. Change the emergency action and routes accordingly.
